Almost time to head back to Northern Minnesota [Feb. 10th, 2007|01:55 am]
ironrangerick
Coming up to the end of the season here in Antarctica. Less then two weeks till heading to Christchurch for a few days then heading home. Going to make one stop on the way to visit friends and hopefully have some fun. Not a lot of fun here this trip, worked way to many hours due to understaffing but it was still a good time overall. Met some new friends, had some drinks but glad to be headed north.

New Position [Oct. 7th, 2006|03:39 pm]

Well something new to do down here. Working in the wastewater plant now. The winter operator was supposed to be relieved the first flight of main body but the third operator that was hired bailed out of the program. It has been a steep learning curve to bring me up to speed of the operations and labwork of this facility and only a week to do it in. The winter operator is planning to fly out to Christchurch, New Zealand this coming Tuesday, he has been on the ice now for 14 months and is looking forward to some well deserved R&R.

Bad weather [Sep. 24th, 2006|03:51 pm]
ironrangerick
It is finally clearing off down here after a weeklong storm. They had to pull the crews off the ice runway, willy field and Peguses field due to the blizzard. They went into condition 1 everywhere but in town. Condition 1 is the worst of the storms. either -100 windchills or no visibility. The temp wasn't bad while the blizzard was going on. It was aboout +10 most of the time. Now the storm is gone but still a bit overcast. The spring season is here and it will start getting better as the sun keeps getting higher in the sky everyday. Only a couple more weeks till main body and a huge influx of people. Population is going to almost triple in a very short time.

Sun is up [Sep. 10th, 2006|08:10 am]

[Current Location |Antarctica]
[mood |busy]

The sun cleared the horizon and shown in town this week. The weather has been pretty good compared to last year, not as cold or windy so far. There has not been any auroras out though. Maybe when the sun gets a bit higher the auroras might become more active down here. My room mate seems to be an ok guy and the new people, FINGYS, are all nice enough also. There are a few that seem to be overdosing on testosterone but that will settle down in the near future. A new place and new people and have to try to get themselves into a pecking order, at least in their own minds. Getting to talk to the few people that are still left here from when I left, boy do they need a tan. They all came through the winter without any major incidences and are getting ready to get off the ice next month. The biggest changes to the ones that stayed are the weight gains or losses from last March. Some got bigger but most worked out allot and have actually lost quite a bit ot weight over the winter down here. Started working out myself, trying to set some attainable goals for myself. Not going at it to hard and heavy but working into some routines that will get me to loose another 20 and put some mass back on. Have a lady workout partner who has never used weights before. She and I are working out 4 to 5 times a week right now and she has caught onto the basic circuit training routines very quickly. The food has been excellent most of the time here so far and the deserts have been to much of a temptation not to have a little now and then. Work has been busy and trying to get everything done and up to date before main body arrives. Going to go from a population of 350 to over 700 in a week. That is going to bring in a whole new bunch of people to meet and they all have new stories to tell.

September 1 and all is well. [Sep. 1st, 2006|08:50 am]

Been a busy week here, getting our 6 month preventative mantenance done. Will take another week to get all the workorders completed then should be ready for Main Body. That is when all the scientists, beakers, and the rest of the support staff start coming in. We have a population of about 350 people here now and when main body hits will shoot up to 1,100 to 1,200 people at the station. Getting caught up on sleep and the time change finally. Or is it just recovering from the time spent in Christchurch New Zealand? What a wonderful city and country to visit. People are friendly and although the weather was a bit cool, spring time there, had a good time wandering around town and seeing some of the sights.

Snowing here this morning. [Aug. 26th, 2006|01:06 pm]
ironrangerick
Got a good 3 inches of snow here and now the wind is picking up and the temp is dropping a little bit. The last flight of Winfly has just landed and will be getting a room mate today. The next flights into McMurdo will begin in October unless someone has to be medivaced out of here. Lots of new faces and some I remember from last year. The going away parties for the winter-over's were fun and things are looking good for the time being. Some new people, Fingies, have a bit of an attitude but I hink that will settle down in the next couple weeks. The sun is up for almost 3 hours a day now with long periods of twighlight. Hope to see the full moon this trip down and get some more pictures in the near future.
The snow reminds me of when I was a kid, everything is new and exciting again.

Made it to McMurdo. Christchurch was beautiful even if it was a bit chilly. They are just coming into spring there and they even got snow there this last winter. Some eople were stranded farther south and had to be rescued from thier homes. The flights were long and still feeling a bit jeg lagged. Remembered some of the winter over people that wintered down here and have ben stopping and saying hi to them and wishing them a safe trip home. Most of the winter over people will be leaving this week. Once the safety orientation is done, then we can go on walking trips around town and on the trails. Hoping to get out and take some pictures this week and watching the sun come up.

Made my decision to go back to Antarctica for the winter. Had a wonderful time there last year and could not turn down the oppertunity to go there again. Will be looking for more long term employment on my return to northern Minnesota. I have met some wonderful new friends this last summer and will miss them. Hoping to meet up with them when I get back.
